Descending into the Underworld
Reading mythology with my daughter led me back to The Odyssey and The Aeneid, and to one recurring image I could not quite leave alone: the hero’s descent into the underworld. Why must Odysseus and Aeneas seek answers from the dead before returning to life? A reflection on death, memory, duty, regret, parental guidance, and the strange knowledge that can only be found in darkness.
